“The idea is to give parents and carers a night off. It’s a chance to do something for themselves, for their own enjoyment and wellbeing” – jam sessions provide an opportunity to play musical instruments and learn a song or two

Parents and carers have the chance to let off steam and show their musical talent during jam sessions organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

The new group is meeting on the last Friday of every month, and the first gathering took place at the end of March.

It is for like-minded parents and carers being supported by EACH’s hospice in Milton, and the sessions are held at Rhinocorn Studios, in Cambridge.

Participants have the chance to play instruments, sing and learn a song or two.

“It’s a space for parents and carers to relax, socialise and share their love of music,” said Ceri Dobson, EACH’s Groups and Events Co-Ordinator at Milton.

“They don’t have to be accomplished musicians or even be able to play an instrument. Far from it. It’s about bouncing off each other, having fun, and, in some cases, trying something new for the first time.

“It’s only going to be a small, intimate group, so there’s no pressure. It’s very organic, and everyone does their own thing.”

Dad Lee Clapton attended the first session and enjoyed playing the drums and guitar.

Along with Ceri, he was joined by two musical members of the EACH team.

“The idea is to give parents and carers a night off,” said Ceri.

“It’s a chance to do something for themselves, for their own enjoyment and wellbeing.

“It’s important to give them that opportunity, because they lead busy, full-on lives. As the old saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

“Parents and carers don’t have to have their own instruments, as the studio provides guitars, drums, keyboard and microphones.”

Teas and coffees are provided, and free parking is available on-site.
